On the 3rd February 2023, the Protection from Redundancy (Pregnancy and Family Leave) Bill and Carer’s Leave Bill completed its passage through House of Commons and will now enter the House of Lords.
This Private Member’s Bill would amend the Employment Rights Act 1996 to enable the Secretary of State to make regulations providing protection against redundancy “during or after” maternity leave, adoption leave or shared parental leave and to add a new provision allowing for regulations about redundancy “during or after” a “protected period of pregnancy”. Any detail will be further outlined in Regulations.
The Bill seeks to extend redundancy protection to apply from the date an employee notifies the employer of her pregnancy until six months after the end of leave.
On 6th February 2023, the Bill had its first reading in the House of Lords. There is as yet no timeline for when any draft regulations will be published.
